White Women Who Teach Black Boys
Eddie Moore, Jr.

Monday, January 13, 2020
9:30 am - 3:00 pm

Hotel Allegro - New Location
Chicago, IL

Dr. Eddie Moore, Jr. will deliver a challenging, informative, and action-oriented program filled with interactive, reflective, and practical exercises and activities designed specifically for white women who teach black boys. The workshop will be useful for others with interest in and influence with black boys.

The majority of public elementary and secondary school teachers in the U.S., Canada, and Britain are white women while the student of color population in those three nations is increasing. Indeed, in 2016 the student of color population outnumbered white students in the U.S for the first time. The research suggests that many teachers are unprepared, unskilled, and in many ways unfamiliar with the cultural, social, and emotional needs of black boys.

The Black Boy and Education
This workshop introduces the book The Guide for White Women Who Teach Black Boys. The book was created to support white women educators to engage in concentrated, focused inquiry around their relationships with black male students and the impact on those relationships related to issues of white supremacy, white privilege, race, and racism. This introductory workshop combines both the current status of race in America as well as the current statistics that support the need for this work directed at the opportunity gap and African American youth in the educational system. Using video footage from interviews with both white female teachers and black men and boys, this workshop facilitates an experiential workshop designed to generate new avenues of reflection and action for white teachers.

Participants will:

  • engage in activities designed to lead into concentrated, focused inquiry around the relationship of white women teachers and black male students;
  • engage in activities from The Guide in areas such as personal and professional introspection around race and racism, stereotyping, and curricular development;
  • develop an action (responsibility) plan to improve the education of young black boys in their classroom or professional environment.
