Adopt a Stocking: Lima man clings to hope in tragic year

LIMA — It’s been such a year of loss for David that he can’t help but look forward to legally gaining a son next year.

In June, David’s wife of 30 years died after David delivering much of her care over the past 19 years, including changing leg dressings and IVs as he watched his bedridden spouse get weaker and weaker. Later that month, his uncle and two cousins died in a car accident.

The one bright spot for him has been his 11-year-old grandson, Alex.

“On the bright side, I’m adopting a little boy,” David said. “We’ve had him for 11 years. He finally gets a daddy.”

David plans to adopt Alex soon.

“We’re really excited for this,” David said. “We’ve had nothing but heartache this year, and now we’re going to have some good heartache.”

The family will receive some aid this Christmas, including from the Salvation Army and the Adopt a Stocking program.

Still, times are tight for the family. David said he fought through COVID-19 twice, including 28 days of quarantine.

“I just praise God I can walk,” David said. “My legs were starting to give out.”

His vehicle, which he uses to drive Alex back and forth to school and to visit his ailing mother in Findlay, is starting to break down. He wishes he could find a reasonably priced truck to help with that.

David said he marveled at Alex’s strength through everything this year.

“He’s doing pretty well,” David said. “We talk together if he has a little loneliness or anything. Me, I’m the one that has the crying issues. I break down sometimes, thinking of my wife and my family.”

He’s not sure what Christmas will look like for his soon-to-be-adopted son this year, as resources are strained.

Alex enjoys playing with Lego bricks and has talked about wanting a snowboard. He also needs shoes (size 8 1/2 wide) and clothes (pants in 36-inch waist, 27-inch length and extra-large shirts).

David said he’s grateful for whatever comes his way after a rough year.

“It would make me so pleased that someone out there knows that I’m needing help and understands my situation,” David said. “It makes me feel awfully nice to know people care out there.”
