How to ace your first date
In our series of articles on dating, relationships, love and sex, we round up the top disability dating sites so you can find that special someone, or a great friendship. Although we first published this article in 2015, we have updated it in 2018 with the latest information and latest disability dating sites.
If Valentine’s Day saw you alone this year, wishing that you had someone to shower with overpriced chocolates and large teddy bears, then perhaps it is time to explore online dating. With the online dating industry now worth billions, the market has expanded rapidly to try and meet the needs of everyone who is looking for love. From uniform dating to websites that cater specifically for tall people, or those with a gluten intolerance, there really is a site out there for everyone.
So what do websites that are aimed specifically at disabled people offer, and who is using them? We’ve compiled a list of some of the biggest disability dating sites out there, and thrown in a general dating website too, as there’s no need to restrict yourself to disability-specific websites if you don’t want to. So whether you’re looking for love, friendship or something in between, here’s the lowdown on the top dating sites online today.
Disabled Dating 4U
Disabled Dating 4U started in the UK back in 2009 as a small site, but has since grown in popularity and claims to have thousands of new members joining it each day. It has now launched in the US as well, so members can view profiles from people in both countries. It is also one of the few dating sites used to connect singles on the latest series of the hit TV show, The Undateables.
There are three different levels of membership to the site – free trial, gold and VIP. Members on a trial can view profiles and send a limited number of messages, while those at the other end of the scale with VIP membership have priority listing on the site and are featured on the homepage.
Dating4Disabled
Founded in 2005, Dating4Disabled is a global website with the express aim of bringing disabled people together across forums, blogs and chat rooms. Designed for use by disabled people only, the site tries to create an inclusive atmosphere in which people feel safe to express themselves.
It’s free to register and its users can share stories and meet like-minded individuals, making the site as much a social network as it is a dating site.
Meet Disabled Singles
Meet Disabled Singles claims to be the fasting growing co-operative of online dating sites in the world. This essentially means that it is part of a collection of dating sites, so if you sign up, your profile will automatically be visible to a larger audience via other relevant dating websites, not just Meet Disabled Singles.
It’s free to join, search member profiles and send ‘flirts’ to other members, but upgrading to premium membership will open up many more features, such as live video chat rooms, private message facility and the ability to send emails to other members.
Disability Match
Disability Match UK is one of the biggest dating websites. While most websites users have some sort of disability, the site is also open to non-disabled users, who in the sites own words; “look beyond an obvious disability and focus on the whole person and a possible relationship they might enjoy.”
The website has also been adapted for smartphones and tablets, meaning it is easy to browse potential matches wherever you are in the world.
Outsiders
Outsiders is a social, peer support and dating club, run by and for disabled people. With a vetting policy, members can be sure that all profiles are genuine, thus allowing users freedom of expression in a safe and secure online environment.
Make the most of the Clubhouse by participating in lively Facebook discussions and private communications. There are also opportunities to meet with fellow local ‘Outsiders’ for organised events. The Outsiders Trust is completely free to join, though it relies entirely on donations.
Whispers4u
Established in 2002, Whispers4u connects disabled people from all around the world, with users in countries such as the UK, the USA, Canada, Australia and many European countries.
The site also reports on many of the success stories of its users, with pages dedicated to couples who have found love and even got married after initially meeting on the website.
Disabled Passions
Disabled Passions is a dating site and a social networking facility for disabled singles. The website offers a range of forums for many specific disabilities if you want to talk to others with the same condition as you.
The site is free to join and gives you the chance to search through people’s blogs and explore a wide range of shared interests and ideas. As much a support network as it is a dating site, Disabled Passions gives you the chance to get to know people in a supportive atmosphere, without any pressure to take things further.
Able To Love You
Able To Love You is not only a UK site, but also has a platform in the US, Canada, New Zealand, South Africa and Ireland. You can start browsing any of the sites by signing up for free. You don’t need to create a profile, but simply state your gender, date of birth and email address. You will need to pay if you want to contact members or use any of the other services.
As well as looking for other singles, you can also look through the Able To Love You blog, although many of its articles are from a few years ago.
Enable Dating
Enable Dating is another UK website that is exclusively for disabled people. Free to join, Enable Dating has an easy to use interface and puts an emphasis on the safety of users, with guides to staying safe online, and in the real world if you decide to meet up for a date.
The site uses an email system that allows you to get in contact with other users without revealing your personal details. There are also chat features and video messaging if you decide to take things a step further. There’s also a 24/7 help feature built into the website and a blocking system if anyone proves troublesome.
Disabled Date Place
Disabled Date Place is marketed as “the online community for disabled singles in the UK.” It is a matchmaking service designed for people with a wide range of disabilities. Everyone, from all over the world, is welcome to join for free.
Members are promised a fun and positive experience with a personal email, which means that there is no need to share your information with others. If you would like to give online dating a go, but worry about having to explain your disability to potential dates, this site could be the one for you. It is user-friendly, with a mobile version too.
OkCupid
One of the biggest and most popular online dating website out there today, OkCupid is an all-inclusive website that caters to everyone, whatever their gender, sexuality or ability. As a mainstream dating website, both disabled and non-disabled people use the service.
Although it can seem daunting to launch yourself into a large dating community, it means the odds are on your side as there are so many users checking the site every day. Whether you choose to disclose your disability in your profile, or wait until you form a connection with someone, you won’t know unless you try – nothing ventured nothing gained. What are you waiting for?
