The undefeated Buckeyes remain at No.4 in the third College Football Playoff rankings of the 2020 season after defeating Michigan State. Alabama remains at No. 1.
The new rankings come as Ohio State's chances for the Big Ten title this year tanked after the University of Michigan canceled their Dec. 12 game due to COVID-19.
The top four are:
- Alabama
- Notre Dame
- Clemson
- Ohio State
Michigan had to cancel its last two games due to positive COVID-19 cases.
"The number of positive tests has continued to trend in an upward direction over the last seven days," said Warde Manuel, U-M's Donald R. Shepherd Director of Athletics. "We have not been cleared to participate in practice at this time. Unfortunately, we will not be able to field a team due to COVID-19 positives and the associated quarantining required of close-contact individuals."
The rules set forth by the Big Ten at the beginning of the season mandated that a team would need at least six games to be eligible for the Big Ten championship game. the canceled Dec. 12 game puts the Buckeyes at five games.
Big Ten released the following after the announcement:
"The Michigan-Ohio State rivalry is one of the most important rivalries in all of sports. The conference shares the disappointment of our student-athletes, coaches, administrators, partners and fans. The conference is committed to transparency and will continue to collaborate with its member institution stakeholders to determine Big Ten Football Championship Game participation requirements as well as tiebreakers."
