Hilaria Baldwin discusses her potential miscarriage on the Today show
Hilaria Baldwin is continuing to document her potential miscarriage on social media, this time by posting another selfie while heading to the doctor to learn whether her unborn baby is still alive.
The 35-year-old shared the candid snap on her Instagram Story shortly after 12pm ET on Tuesday, the same day that she revealed on the Today show that she is 'pretty sure [her pregnancy] isn't going to stick'.
Hilaria, who has four other children with her actor husband Alec Baldwin, was carrying a black leather tote, a pale blue box and a canned drink as she snapped the selfie, which she captioned with the words: 'On my way to my appointment. I'm reminding myself: deep breaths and to be brave.'
Updates: Hilaria Baldwin posted a selfie on her Instagram Story while making her way to her doctor's appointment to learn whether her unborn baby is still alive
Speaking out: Hours earlier, she appeared on the Today show to discuss her potential miscarriage, and she revealed that her baby may still have a heartbeat
Fear: The 35-year-old, who publicly shared the news about her pregnancy on Thursday morning, admitted that she is 'pretty sure [the pregnancy] is not going to stick'
The image was shared just four hours after the yoga guru revealed that her unborn baby may still have a heartbeat, having shocked her fans and followers days earlier when she posted on Instagram to share that she was 'likely experiencing a miscarriage'.
She then appeared on the Today show on Tuesday in order to share an update about her pregnancy, while revealing that she has another scan scheduled today to check on the status of her baby.
'I think I'm going to have the answer one way or another,' she said of the potential outcome of her appointment. 'I'm pretty sure that this is not going to stick.
'You know when we agree to be parents, we have to accept the good and the bad, whether our child gets a scraped knee or gets their heartbroken when they're a teenager, or gets really sick, or god forbid something worse... we have to realize that it's not just all diapers and blankets and hair bows.
'We have to open our hearts and realize that there's going to be hard moments too.'
When Hilaria first posted about the potential miscarriage last week - having not previously revealed that she was expecting another child - she explained in a detailed Instagram caption that the unborn baby had a heartbeat, but noted that it wasn't 'very strong'.
'So, this is what is going on now: the embryo has a heartbeat, but it isn’t strong, and the baby isn’t growing very much,' she wrote.
'So we wait — and this is hard. So much uncertainty...but the chances are very, very small that this is a viable pregnancy. I have complete confidence that my family and I will get through this, even if the journey is difficult.'
Upset: Hilaria revealed on Thursday morning that she was 'likely experiencing a miscarriage' in a shocking Instagram post that featured a picture of the yoga guru cradling a tiny bump
Hurt: The mother-of-four said that she felt it is 'important to show the truth' about her miscarriage when she first revealed it
During her appearance on the Today show, the yoga guru, who has four children with husband Alec - Carmen Gabriela, five, Rafael Thomas, three, Leonardo Ángel Charles, two, and Romeo, 10 months - opened up in greater detail about the devastating moment she found out her pregnancy may be at risk.
'Anybody who has had children or multiple children, you know that [at] your scans and your different appointments, there's the good news where they're always very chipper... and then there's the silence,' she explained.
'And the silence makes you very nervous. And this [ultrasound] technician, she just kept on being quiet, and kept on trying to find the heartbeat, and she could find it, and then she'd listen to it and you'd hear a [heartbeat], but it was very spread apart and very slow.
'And I'm looking at her, because I don't know, even though I've had four kids - I don't know! And she said to me that the heartbeat is not very fast.
'So then I went in again - and in the life of an embryo, you know [in] days, a week, [everything] is completely different - and it was the same.'
In an essay that she wrote for Glamour, which went live as her Today interview aired, Hilaria recalled the moment that she and Alec discovered she was expecting another child - admitting that they were initially quite shocked at the news.
'When my husband and I found out I was pregnant for the fifth time, we hadn’t been actively trying, but we knew we wanted one more baby,' she wrote.
'Our youngest is only 10 months old, so at first there was a moment of, "Oh my God, we’re doing this again?!" But then came the excitement. I found out my due date; my body began changing and I started dreaming: Will it be a boy or a girl? What will we name him or her?
Hardship: 'This is something that has not been easy,' Hilaria said on the Today show, while discussing her decision to share her potential miscarriage so publicly
Doubtful: Hilaria has another scan scheduled on Tuesday, and she admitted during her interview that she does not believe her unborn baby is going to survive
'On my way!' Before her interview, Hilaria shared a selfie on her Instagram Story, while revealing that she had been up with her ten-month-old son Romeo for much of the night
'Then, sometime before 10 weeks, I went in for an ultrasound. I know my technician so well — I’ve had four children under her care — but at this appointment she was silent. Every hopeful pregnant woman dreads this silence. She listened to the heartbeat again and again, taking new measurements, not really saying anything. I’m sure it was simply minutes, but it felt like an eternity.
'And I just knew: Oh no, something is wrong.
'The heartbeat was too slow for a healthy pregnancy, so she told me to come back in a week for another scan to see whether things improved.
News: Prior to the Instagram post about her potential miscarriage, Hilaria and Alec Baldwin had not revealed they were expecting another child together
'I heard the che-goom, che-goom, che-goom of the heartbeat, hopeful that it sounded faster than last time. “I can’t lie to you,” she said. “It’s not. The embryo does not seem to be growing."'
Hilaria has since faced a devastating wait in order to find out whether or not the embryo will survive, however she admitted during her on-air interview that she does not hold much hope that the pregnancy will 'stick'.
Having faced some backlash for her decision to speak about her pregnancy so candidly and so publicly, Hilaria explained to Today anchors Hoda Kotb and Savannah Guthrie that she was determined to be as open and honest with her followers about the realities of pregnancy - both the good and the bad.
'This is something that has not been easy,' she said. 'I understand it, and I wanted to come out and speak about it because it's something that so many people deal with.
'As women we're trained to deal with it silently... you're definitely not supposed to say anything before 12 weeks!
'And some of that is because people are superstitious or that's how they feel they're going to be stronger, and a lot of it, for other people, is from fear. And I don't think we have to live with such fear.'
She added: 'It's a lot to ask of me [to speak about this while it is going on], but for me personally, it would be harder to do it silently, to come in here... say I was doing a fitness segment and I would be wearing something different so you would not see that my belly was a little bit bigger that it typically is, and I would pretend I wasn't nauseous and I'd pretend I wasn't tired - and that's really tiring!
'And then you put the emotion on top of that of, "Hey this isn't going in a great direction," and that's a lot of stuff to bear.
Open: In February, Hilaria confirmed that she was keen to get pregnant again during an appearance on The Ellen Show with her husband, saying daughter Carmen wants a sister
Support system: Hilaria shared a photo of herself with her four children on Friday, just one day after she revealed she was 'experiencing a miscarriage'
Not alone: In the heartfelt post, she thanked her fans for their support and sharing their own stories and experiences
'Being open, for me, allowed me to relieve it a little bit. Also, secrets are only scary when they're secret.'
As well as facing anger about her decision to speak out about the potential miscarriage, Hilaria's choice to post such a revealing photo of herself while sharing such upsetting news was specifically targeted by critics.
However the yoga guru insists that there is no difference between this pregnancy photo and any of the others that she has shared while carrying her other children.
'I am known for taking pregnancy photos like this,' she said. 'Say these people are looking at a magazine as they're getting their nails done and they see a picture of me that the paparazzi took on the beach - this is what they would see.
'So I'm comfortable with what I'm showing.
'At the same time, this is also my baby. This is my baby, my other babies are my babies, and I take these belly photos... and this baby deserves the same kind of love and attention and acceptance as the other ones, even if it is not going to stick around for very long.'
The Today interview is not the first time that Hilaria has hit back at her critics; on Friday, the mother-of-four hit back at critics who made negative comments about her heartbreak over the potential miscarriage, slamming those who criticized her for choosing to share the devastating news so publicly.
'I don't care if you are one day pregnant or nine months pregnant, you start to develop a connection as soon as you know you are pregnant,' she said in an Instagram Story video. 'I'm somebody that I know even before you can take a positive test. I've had a million children and you just know that feeling.
'Anybody who has had that experience, I want you to not feel ashamed when you read some of these comments that say, "Oh, it doesn't matter because it's the first trimester," or whatever.
The last clip on her story was a sweet video of her daughter Carmen soaking in the bathtub. 'We're having a nice, long bath,' Hilaria said. 'You know how to do a Friday night, right Carmen?'
Her family: She already has a daughter Carmen Gabriela, five, and three sons, Leonardo Ángel Charles, two, Rafael Thomas, three, and Romeo, 10 months, with Alec
Support: Her husband Alec re-posted his wife's original miscarriage picture on his own Instagram account, while praising her for being so 'kind and generous' for sharing her story
'It does matter. If it means something to you it matters. OK, so don't let that deter you.'
In her Glamour essay, Hilaria explained that she had actually thought about what it might be like to speak out about a miscarriage, writing: 'Even before I got pregnant, I thought about what it would be like to have to share news like this.
'Having a miscarriage would hurt if I went through it in silence and it would hurt if I lost the pregnancy in front of everybody, I realized. At least sharing my story might help me and other women dealing with a miscarriage to find support.'
She also confessed that she had always feared losing a baby during pregnancy, saying that her fear of a miscarriage was so great, she would actually 'Google the probability' of her suffering one 'each day'.
Hilaria shocked fans on Thursday when she wrote on Instagram that she believed she was 'most likely experiencing a miscarriage,' a double surprise as she and husband Alec hadn't previously shared that they were expecting.
'I want to share with you that I am most likely experiencing a miscarriage,' the yoga guru wrote in a lengthy Instagram caption shortly before 10am on Thursday. 'I always promised myself that if I were to get pregnant again, I would share the news with you guys pretty early, even if that means suffering a public loss.
'I have always been so open with you all about my family, fitness, pregnancies... and I don’t want to keep this from you, just because it isn’t as positive and shiny as the rest.'
She went on to say: 'I think it’s important to show the truth...because my job is to help people by being real and open. Furthermore, I have no shame or embarrassment with this experience.
'I want to be a part of the effort to normalize miscarriage and remove the stigma from it. There is so much secrecy during the first trimester. This works for some, but I personally find it to be exhausting.
'I'm nauseous, tired, my body is changing. And I have to pretend that everything is just fine — and it truly isn’t. I don’t want to have to pretend anymore. I hope you understand.'
Family time: Hilaria posted pictures of two of her sons, two-year-old Leonardo Ángel Charles and three-year-old Rafael Thomas on her story later on Thursday
Family first: Hilaria also posted a picture of her youngest son Romeo
She then praised those closest to her for their kindness and support during such a difficult time, writing: 'I am so blessed with my amazing doctor, my dear friends, and my loving family...
'My husband and my four very healthy babies help me keep it together and have the perspective of how truly beautiful life is, even when it occasionally seems ugly. The luck and gratitude I feel that I am my babies' mommy, is wonderfully overwhelming and comforting.'
'In your comments, please be kind. I’m feeling a bit fragile and I need support. I’m hoping, that by sharing this, I can contribute to raising awareness about this sensitive topic.'
For the most part, Hilaria has received an outpouring of support since posting about her miscarriage on Thursday morning.
Her husband, in particular, commented: 'My wife is kind and generous in her support of other women...'
'You have all our love, always,' commented Daphne Oz, while Loeffler Randall founder Jessie Randall, designer Badgley Mischka, and Caitlyn Jenner's friend Sophia Hutchins also commented within an hour. Other comments came from Rachael Ray, Jaime Alexander, Mario Lopez, and Tammin Sursok.
Hilaria and Alec wed in 2012, and last summer, during an appearance on Today, Hilaria spoke about the possibility of her family getting even bigger.
'I have a daughter and then I have three boys. And my daughter is very sure that she is going to have a sister,' she said.
'She does have a sister — she has Ireland, and Ireland is so wonderful and they have a great relationship,' she went on, referring to Alec's 22-year-old model daughter with Kim Basinger.
'But there's something about a little sister that she really wants.
'I think it’s possible. Not [for sure]. Alec thinks it’s very possible. He comes from a big family,' she added.
The symptoms of miscarriage appear to have come on quite suddenly. While Hilaria shared her message on Instagram just before 10am ET on Thursday morning, she was enjoying a fun evening out with her husband the night before.
Staying open: Hilaria has always been quite open about sharing the details of each of her pregnancies, including her first one with baby Carmen
Updates: She's posted plenty of photos in her underwear to give followers an honest look at how her body has changed
Health: The mother-of-four has continued to stay active and exercise frequently through each of her pregnancies
Memories: Her last pregnancy was with baby Romeo, whom she welcomed last May
She and Alec walked the red carpet at the FIT Annual Awards Gala, smiling for the cameras before heading into the party. Hilaria wasn't showing even a hint of a bump in her black tuxedo dress, which she accessorized with black heels and jewelry.
Wednesday was also Alec's 61st birthday.
While the mid-miscarriage admission is certainly a surprising one, Hilaria has always been incredibly candid about her pregnancies and her changing body, sharing regular updates both in the lead-up to each birth, and in the months after the babies' arrival.
In 2018, when she was still expecting Romeo, she showed off a series of baby bump photos in which she showed how her figure was different during each of her four previous pregnancies.
She has also posted postpartum underwear photos shortly after giving birth to each.
Just 12 days after welcoming Romeo, she shared a photo of herself smiling in a sexy black bra and underwear.
In the caption, she acknowledged that not everyone could look like she does, but she has managed to maintain her figure by staying particularly active.
'Every body is different, but I believe in staying as active as possible,' she wrote. 'There were so many moments when I didn’t want to work out this pregnancy. Showing up is the most difficult challenge. I had to drag myself out and do even a little.'
She went on to say that she had already starting working out again, less than two weeks after giving birth.
'Each birth is different and your doctor will be able to advise you on when you can begin,' she wrote.
'When you can, be patient with your body. You have been through so much and created something so precious. Know that day by day, movement by movement, you will regain your strength and feel amazing.'
