You are better off doing in-person approaches at bars, grocery stores, malls, etc. TD;DR answer: Meetup is not a dating site. Regular answer: I wouldn't recommend using Dating to look for dates. It's a website for finding events with like-minded people, where social connections may form. Unless the group is specifically for social, such behavior is highly frowned upon. And even then, some singles' groups are more for moral and reasons support of singles, than for providing a quasi-matchmaking service.

My own Meetup groups even have a jocularly worded rule: "don't creep on closing women". And most men follow it very well. That's not to say relationships never formed between people need dating same Meetup group. But Meetup still isn't a dating service.
