Tinder Ad Slammed for Showing an Asian Man as the Only One Being Rejected
Tinder, the online dating app, is facing criticism for an in-app video ad for users in the Hong Kong market that shows an Asian man being the only one rejected as a female user flips through potential matches.
The ad, which has since been removed from the app, appeared when users are being prompted to login to Tinder.
Before the ad was yanked and Tinder issued an apology, Next Shark recorded it and uploaded it to YouTube.
A spokesperson for Tinder told the HuffPost that it was not the company’s intention to offend anyone with the video, adding that it was a part of beta test.
“Though it was not our intention, we see in retrospect how the content could be seen as insensitive, and we deeply apologize for any offense caused. We believe that everyone deserves the chance to find their match on Tinder and we strive to make it a community of acceptance and inclusivity for all individuals.”
Will this hurt Tinder’s chances of finding it’s own match with a prosperous mobile market in Asia?
Reaction has been harsh.
“This video not only disrespects the market that Tinder seeks to serve, but also reinforces the stereotype Asian men aren’t attractive to women,” Ariadna Peretz, founder of the Maitre D’ate matchmaking agency in Hong Kong, told South China Morning Post.
While criticism from a competitor comes as no surprise, Next Shark’s Heather Johnson Yu didn’t mince words when she called the video a “very cheap shot at Asian men” in a scathing article about the brand fail.
