Match Group Backs Friends-Based Dating App ‘Ship’
Match Group has teamed up with Betches, a female lifestyle blog, to launch a new friends-based dating app.
Ship lets daters add their friendship group to an in-app chat where they can share potential matches and discuss their profile.
The single user can filter their preferences by gender, age and location and the app will show profiles that fit these criteria to the friends who also swipe on their behalf.
If they swipe right, they will have the option to send that profile to the group chat. However, like other dating apps, the two singles will only be able to chat if they both ‘like’ each other.
Samantha Fishbein, COO of Betches, explained to AdWeek: “We really wanted the app to convey a feeling of both friendship and being social while you’re dating.”
Betches boasts an Instagram following of almost 6.5 million, so there is already a large pool of potential users.
Match Group is reportedly contributing all of the dating app technology and software, while Betches is the main driving force behind the idea, providing the marketing and branding.
Fishbein continued to Cosmopolitan: “Ship eliminates the pressure and anxiety surrounding dating apps and talking with a stranger because you have your friends cheering you on throughout the entire process.”
Ship is currently available to download for free on iOS. It is also not ad-supported at the moment, although the founders admit that this could change in the future.
