It is exciting to color outside the lines and meet new people, but dating people outside your “type?” Well, that is even more of a turn-on.

Dating a “bad boy” is a way of living on the edge without actually living on the edge. There is an attraction to the mysterious conversation and the sex appeal of tattoos. It can be even more exciting knowing that our parents probably wouldn’t approve. Altogether, the “bad boy” makes us feel rebellious—at least that’s what we hope.

In reality, most women fall for the “bad boy” with the hope that they can change him. It comes from a person with a big heart with a need to nurture those around you. As we mature, we learn that we cannot change the people we love. Instead, we must learn to embrace their flaws and love them beyond their imperfections.

It’s natural for women to go through phases where they date a “bad boy,” even in the Indian community. I just went through this phase myself, and it was exciting!

I fell head over heels for a guy, and it was a phase I don’t regret. He was masculine, full of mystery and had quite a history. Looking back, I realize that I could never be with a “bad boy” forever, but these qualities do keep the relationship exciting.

What initially attracted me to this “bad boy” was the conversation. When a person can hold a conversation and tell stories of changed past, with potential for a promising future, an attraction develops.

Additionally, the tattoos, masculinity, and protectiveness he had over me, as well as his exciting lifestyle, kept me intrigued. He never let me get away with being a brat, and challenged me in ways I never knew I could be challenged. All in all, it was an incredible learning experience for me.

Bollywood also does a great job of portraying the typical “bad boy” love story, such as the one in Mohit Suri’s “Ek Villian.” The hero, played by Siddharth Malhotra, was a gangster with a tough exterior who turned his life around when he fell in love with a girl, played by Shraddha Kapoor, who had a big heart.

As portrayed in the film, the first thought most girls have when they see a “bad boy” is could lead an adventure. What I found through my “bad boy” phase is that most “bad boys” aren’t really “bad.”

Instead, they are nice guys with soft hearts. Most often, once you get past the hard exterior and break down their walls, they have the potential to be the “nice guy” you have been searching for.

The trickiest and most trying part is breaking down the walls. Love is like a puzzle—you have to find your matching puzzle piece in order to complete the picture. Similarly, in order to break down the wall, you have to be the right match for that person.

That being said, not every “bad boy” is going to be the right match for you or even adventurous. If you are attracted to one, go in with the same caution as you would when embarking on any new relationship.

Dating someone can be scary, but it should also be fun. Dating is a period of time when you figure out what you want, or don’t, out of a relationship. And who knows—you may or may not find a way to break down walls you never knew you had.

Take a chance, after all, “bad boys” always make for a good story.
