
Double Your Matches With Data: Successful Profile Pictures
With the volume of dating profiles on the rise, it’s harder than ever to make a strong impression. To help you out, we’ve used social media to do the maths on what works.
As part of our Decade of Dating research, we used Brandwatch Consumer Research, from 1 July 2010 to 4 February 2020, to analyze profile pictures which have made it into public social media posts.
Here’s the breakdown of that analysis, by dating platform:
Tinder
With over 50 million users worldwide, Tinder is the busiest in terms of crazy profile pics, which range from the standard to the wacky and attention grabbing.
People love
There were 1,671 profile pictures on social including pets. The top snapped animals were:
- Dogs
- Cats
What are users doing in their pictures?
We also looked at how people are posing, or what they’re doing in Tinder profile pictures posted on social media. The top actions were:
- Sitting
- Bodybuilding
- Dancing
- Boxing
- Jumping
And they’re most likely pictured…
- By the sea
- At the beach

Bumble

The fourth biggest platform is also very progressive and urban-orientated, even down to the pictures which are posted online.
People love
If you thought Tinder was obsessed with pets, our image analysis revealed that there were 24k posts online of pets in Bumble profile pictures! The most common pets were…
- Dogs
- Puppies
- Cats
What are users doing in their pictures?
Bumble users are active, both physically and politically!
- Cheerleading
- Dancing
- Protests and demonstrations
- Boating
In terms of poses, sitting and selfies lead the pack.
And they’re most likely pictured at:
Urban scenarios in cities lead the way with 4.5K posts. The most common scenes were:
- Public spaces
- Skyline
Grindr
Grindr users love music and are big foodies. But what can we learn from their profile pics?
People love
People are less likely to share their pets on Grindr, which means there are less social posts. But there was one thing that stood out in the pics we analyzed:
- Facial hair
What are users doing in their pictures?
The top activities in profile photos were:
- Body building
- Boxing/combat sport
- Acrobatics
Sitting was the most popular pose, much like on other platforms.
And they’re most likely pictured at:
Did we mention Grindr users love music? The top locations pictured were:
- Festivals
- Temples
Hinge
Head to Hinge to look for an artsy or student-y partner that’s into sports and food.
What are users doing in their pictures?
- Sitting
- Exercise
- American football
And they’re most likely pictured at:
Hinge users are more city based, according to our image analysis. It revealed the following as top locations:
- Metropolises
- Neighborhood areas

If you’re looking for an artist or an executive into books, family and parenting this could be the platform for you.
What are users doing in their pictures?
It’s a real mix.
- Sitting
- Surfing
- Equestrianism
And they’re most likely pictured…:
- At brunch
- On vacation
- In caves
- In storms
Summary: Maybe just use a beach pic?
So there’s one common scene here: vacation, vacation, vacation. But be not afraid if you haven’t had a break recently – you can just head to a local festival or monument and get snapping. These pictures are about talking points.
