Online Tutorial on Abuse– a self-paced tutorial on abuse for clergy, spiritual leaders and teachers. The purpose is to provide leaders with the needed information on issues of domestic violence and childhood sexual assault. Given the prevalence of abuse, all faith leaders need basic knowledge about these two types of violence.

Battered Women Charged with Crimes– this previously- recorded webinar was developed to help prosecutors and criminal justice partners identify, evaluate, and develop improved responses to cases involving battered women who are arrested for using violence against their abusers.

Introducing Expert Testimony in Domestic Violence Cases– public perceptions of how victims should respond to physical and emotional trauma often conflict with the way victims actually behave, and these misconceptions can severely affect the fact finders’ assessment of victim credibility and ultimate case outcome. Experienced professionals familiar with victim behavior understand that victims have individual responses to trauma that are often counterintuitive to public expectations, but may be unable or unsure of how to explain this to the jury. Introducing expert testimony to explain victim behavior is a way to dispel myths and assist the jury in making an informed decision based on the evidence. This recording described common victim behaviors and dynamics in intimate partner violence cases, as well as their impact on fact finders' assessments of victim credibility. The presenter discussed the law related to the introduction of expert testimony by the prosecution to explain victim behavior and how to identify experts qualified to testify on this issue. The recording also highlighted the importance of deciding whether to introduce expert testimony in a case. In addition, it identified ways to work with experts to prepare a case for trial even if the testimony will not be introduced.

Introducing Expert Testimony in Sexual Violence Cases– the public has deeply-rooted perceptions about sexual violence and about how victims of sexual assault should behave. The realities of sexual violence are quite different. Experienced professionals familiar with the dynamics of sexual violence understand that victims have individual responses to trauma that are often counterintuitive to public expectations. Without the benefit of a proper explanation, however, jurors may wrongly interpret a victim’s actions during and after an assault as reasons not to believe the victim’s testimony. Expert testimony to explain victim behavior is often the best way to dispel myths and assist the jury to make an informed decision based on the evidence, viewed in its proper context. This previously-recorded webinar described the impact of trauma on victims, including cognitive and behavioral reactions, and discussed the effect of common victim behaviors on factfinders’ assessments of victim credibility. It discussed the law related to the prosecution’s introduction of expert testimony on victim behavior, how to identify experts qualified to testify on this subject, and what the parameters of such testimony should be.

Investigating and Prosecuting Alcohol-Facilitated Sexual Assault– this previously-recorded webinar was developed to assist investigators, prosecutors, and other allied professionals address the unique challenges these cases present.

Complicated matters: domestic and sexual violence, problematic substance use and mental ill-health– domestic and violence, problematic substance use and mental ill-health are three issues which often co-exist. And when they do, things can become complicated. Maturing Your Services: Advocating for Survivors of Sexual Violence in Later Life– this interactive online course is designed to increase advocates' and other victim service professionals' capacity for serving victims of sexual violence in later life. Considerations for serving older victims are explored in three sections ~ social, physical and emotional factors ~ with opportunities to practice and reflect upon the information, 2013.

Reporting on Sexual Violence, Poynter Institute – this course provides information for journalists on understanding sexual violence, including explanations about the differences between prevention and risk reduction. It offers tools and guidelines for interviewing sexual violence survivors, using video, photography and other visuals in news media and avoiding predictable or potentially harmful coverage, 2013.

Sexual Violence in Disasters

Building Community Partnerships for Pre-Disaster Planning– this online course discusses the importance of planning for sexual violence prevention and response before a disaster, and highlights guiding strategies and key community partners in the pre-disaster planning process, 2013.

Developing a Plan for Sexual Violence Prevention and Response– this online course is designed to assist local and state sexual violence preventionists, victim advocates and their community partners in creating pre-disaster plans for their organizations and communities. It highlights four core components of a pre-disaster plan to help organizations recover quickly and continue to provide vital services in a disaster, 2013.

Understanding the Scope of the Problem– this interactive online course addresses the increased vulnerability to sexual violence that can occur during and after disasters. Participants will learn about the connections between oppression, sexual violence and disasters. With case studies from Hurricane Katrina and its aftermath, and examples from other recent calamities around the world, the module highlights the need for pre-planning to prevent and response to sexual in future disasters, 2012.

Online Grants Financial Management Training – DOJ is offering two grants financial management trainings. Both courses are basic-level grants financial management courses. The topics are broken out into separate modules, with the overall course taking as much as 16 - 20 hours to complete. Once you have completed the overall registration process, you may select the appropriate training course and begin taking each module (in order) at your own pace.
