Perry Street, owner of Scruff, adds another gay dating app to its portfolio
– Reporter, New York Business Journal
Perry Street Software Inc. has acquired Jack’d, one of the first gay dating apps.
The New York-based software developer, which also owns the gay-dating app Sruff, will operate Jack’d as a separate and stand-alone entity.
Perry Street CEO Eric Silverberg, who I interviewed in April, praised the deal:
For years, we have admired the diverse and global community on Jack’d. Since its launch in 2010, Jack’d has grown to more than 5 million members worldwide. This acquisition will provide Jack’d members with the same combination of technology and active moderation we have developed at SCRUFF, so that the Jack’d community members will be protected against harassment, spam bots, scammers, and risks while traveling.
Terms of the deal remain undisclosed, but Perry Street plans to invest its resources into the Jack'd app in order to bolster the technology and security, as well as the removal of all programmatic advertising.
That's one thing that differentiates Scruff from its rivals.
Under the helm of Silverberg, Scruff keeps its security standards high and promises never to share users' personal data with third parties — something Grindr was blamed for last year.
Now Jack'd users are being guaranteed the same treatment.
“We recognize that the growth Jack’d experienced in building its app created some technical and logistical growing pains, and we are eager through this acquisition to provide Jack’d members with a much improved software experience,” Silverberg added.
The team behind Scruff and Perry Street Software moved to New York in 2012. Before that, the team had been traveling and working from various locations including San Francisco, Las Vegas, and Los Angeles.
Prior to buying Jack'd, Scruff — available for Android and iPhone — was the only product of Perry Street Software.
